General Information
Oita University, a corporatised
national university, was newly founded
in October 2003 by the merger of the former Oita University and Oita
Medical University. The University now consists of four faculties and
five graduate schools with 1,600 faculty and staff members, 5,100
undergraduate students, 720 graduate students, as well as 150
international students from 19 countries.
The International Student Center was established by Oita University in
May 2000 and it was formally recognized by the Ministry of Education,
Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in April 2003. However, the
Center has been reconstructed as the Center for International Education
and Research (CIER) since 1 April 2007.
The purpose of CIER is to promote the exchange activities of Oita
University through the organization and provision of courses in the
Japanese language and Japan-related subjects (which are given mainly in
English). Exchanges are promoted between international and Japanese
students not only on campus but also within the wider local community.
In addition, information and advice is offered by the Center on course
structures and living arrangements to both international students
wishing to study in Japan and Japanese students intending to study
abroad.
The Center also conducts research on the Japanese language, Japanese
studies, international exchanges and international education. Finally,
at the Faculty level, it promotes academic activities such as
international seminars and symposia between the Center and world
partner universities.
